How to evaluate Amazon niche competition

Updated October 6, 2026 · SellThisNext

Compare click concentration, review barriers and newer listings in Opportunity Explorer before choosing an Amazon product niche.

Define the competitors that serve the same need

Start with a narrow customer need and inspect which products Amazon groups around it. Remove mental comparisons with accessories, bundles or premium versions that serve a different use case. A niche average can hide several price tiers. Write down the product type, intended shopper and price band you would actually enter before judging the competition.

Look at where shopper attention goes

Use the product table to identify how clicks are distributed. A niche dominated by a few listings can be difficult to enter even when total demand looks attractive. Many clicked listings may indicate a broader opening, but can also signal fragmented customer needs. Click share measures attention within the reported scope; it is not market share by revenue and does not establish profitability.

Read reviews alongside click share

Inspect review counts and ratings for the listings receiving meaningful clicks. Lower-review listings getting attention can justify further research; low reviews alone do not prove weak competition. Check price, brand recognition, bundles, delivery and listing quality. A low-review product with a unique feature or aggressive promotion may be a poor comparison for your planned offer.

Investigate newer products manually

Where launch or release information is available, inspect newer listings with meaningful clicks. Check whether they are genuinely new offers, variations of established products, or backed by known brands. A listing date is a screening clue rather than evidence that a new seller can reproduce the result. Read negative reviews to identify a specific improvement you could deliver and test.

Turn the evidence into a shortlist

Compare ideas using the same marketplace and reporting window. Record click concentration, the review barrier, the price range and one credible differentiation angle for each. Mark uncertain evidence for follow-up. An accessible niche still needs viable sourcing, fulfillment and customer acquisition costs; review the product research checklist before ordering samples.
